WHY DO I NEED A ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?
Patients typically need a root canal treatment when there is inflammation or infection in the root canal.
If the pulp inflammation is left untreated, then it can lead to pain, an abscess or even tooth loss. A root canal treatment is done in order to save your tooth.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF A ROOT CANAL PROBLEM?
The main causes of needing a root canal treatment include:
- Large cavities
- Large fillings
- Ill- fitting crowns or fillings
- Cracks
- Trauma.
A ROOT CANAL TREATMENT CAN SAVE YOUR TEETH
Before the root canal treatment:
1- Decay
2- Inflamed pulp
3- Infected pulp
4- Abscess
After the treatment:
1- Crown
2- Core build-up
3- Gutta-percha filling
4- Bone healed
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT WHEN I GET A ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?
Before the treatment:
The dentist will complete a thorough exam and take the necessary x- rays in order to diagnose the problem. Local anesthesia is given to numb the tooth.
During the procedure:
An opening is made in the tooth to access the root canals. Very small instruments are used to remove the infection and shape the canal for the filling material. Once the infection is gone, the canal space is sealed with a biocompatible filling material (gutta percha).
After the procedure:
The tooth may be sore for a few days after the procedure. The dentist will give you thorough post- operative instructions. You will the need to place a crown or a final restoration in order to protect the tooth.
